Letter I received from Congressman today. Join us in fight for our future

July 19, 2011
Dear Mrs. Semina,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts regarding the health and safety of children. I appreciate your interest in the issues facing our country and state, and I am glad for the opportunity to respond to your inquiry. By contacting me on issues important to you, I am better able to represent Utah in Congress.

As a parent, and the spouse of a pediatrician, I am very aware of the importance of childhood health and transportation safety for our children. I believe it is a priority to encourage regular physical activity for children and to provide safe venues for outdoor exercise. The Safe Routes to School program was established to improve childhood health by encouraging children to walk and bike to school and to facilitate safe paths for these non-vehicular modes of transportation. In 2009, the Safe Routes to School program constructed sidewalks, installed street signs, and taught bicycle and walking education classes that directly improved the safety of students commuting to more than two dozen Utah schools.

This year, Congress may consider reauthorization of the Surface Transportation Bill, comprehensive, multiyear legislation that covers a range of transportation projects throughout the country, including the Safe Routes to School program.

I was actively involved in writing the previous Surface Transportation Bill, which provided significant emphasis on bicycle and pedestrian programs that encourage a greater number of non-motorized trips, as well as pedestrian and cyclist safety, health, and education programs. I will continue to support transportation solutions that improve the safety and health of our nation’s youngest citizens.

Again, thank you for sharing your concerns with me. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact my office.
Sincerely,
JIM MATHESON
Member of Congress
